What better way to begin the summer by hanging out with the dean of the law school? My friends and I attended the Public Interest Project auction for BU Law in March, where we bid on and won a dinner with the dean and two professors at a great restaurant in Brookline. We finally scheduled it for this past Thursday. I arrived first, was seated, and was soon joined by one of the professors, Professor Caruso. She is from Southern Italy and teaches many courses on international law and the European Union at BU Law, so although I didn't have any classes with her this year I was especially excited to be able to talk with her at dinner. The other professor was Professor Silbaugh, our legislation professor and one of our favorites this year (though we did tell Dean O'Rourke multiple times how much we enjoyed all of our professors this year). Three other girls from my class were also there, Brigid, Elle, and Yasmin. I had so much fun! Dean O'Rourke, Professor Silbaugh, and Professor Caruso are really friendly, talkative, and funny. They all seemed genuinely interested in us and our lives, and we learned a lot about each of the women too. They also shared inside jokes among each other, but gave us the background for all of them, so we were entertained with myriad stories throughout the evening. I hope I am able to maintain the relationships I began with the Dean and Professors because they seem like great people and we had some really good conversations during the dinner.
The night got even more interesting after I left dinner. We ate near Camilo's, my boyfriend's, apartment, so I walked over his way afterwards to hang out and possibly meet up with friends downtown together. On the way there I noticed a fire truck outside, then as I neared, two ambulances and a multitude of police cars. I looked around the crowd of people standing there but couldn't find Camilo among them. However, it was only a small crowd, as the police and firemen had only evacuated the first floor. Nevertheless, though people were standing on their balconies on the upper floors watching the action, and I could see Camilo moving around in his apartment, no one was being allowed into the building as they would have to cross the first floor. At the same time, Camilo didn't want to leave for fear of not being let back in. I went home around 10pm after being told by a policeman that they would eventually evacuate the entire building. Apparently management had put sealant around the foundation in the back for the underground parking garage, and it let out toxic fumes that got into the building. Around midnight I got a call from Camilo that the building had in fact been evacuated.
Being done with work, school, and classes is great, but I've forgotten what it's like to not have anything to do, to have absolutely no obligations. Hopefully I can get used to this for the summer. I took my new-found freedom on Friday and went shopping before seeing Camilo off at the airport for his trip home to Colombia. That night was the official end of classes/1L year/school celebration at Umbria nightclub downtown. Umbria is usually 25+ (as opposed to 21+), but BU Law reserved the top floor so under 25s could get in. Brigid and another classmate/friend, Lauretta, came over before we went out, and we stopped first at a birthday party for another classmate, Alexix, before going downtown with some other friends. We saw many other friends at the party, and managed to track down a few more at the club. Thanks to finals and the student government's desire to keep bar reviews (events for the law students at local bars) cheap, Friday was the first proper night out I've had in months. Hopefully it is indicative of what is to come this summer.
